Monarchs Wallop Aztecs 25-0

A few people gave the Monarchs a chance when they took on the North Philly Aztecs Sunday at Team Vick Field located at 9th and Hunting Park.  Coach Keith and his players, in turn, embraced the challenge.  Because win or loose, the players realized the spot light North Philly brings.  The Aztecs are one of the most successful and most feared teams in the city of Philadelphia.  Fortunately, the Delco Monarchs reside in Darby Borough which is located in Delaware County.  And reputations mean nothing according to Coach Greg.  Why?  Because its rough out here too.  Times is tough on Main Street not Broad Street Coach Tone stated.

As far as the game, the win sparks what could be the start of something special.  It was a decisive victory.  The offense was humming all morning long and J. Gbaley led the way with 10 carries and 120 yards rushing and 3 touchdowns.  F. Darko Jr also pitched in and added another 60 punishing yards as both kids proved to be very tough to tackle.  On defense, quarterback/defensive back AJ Madden Jr led the charge with several solo tackles and a pick 6.  Madden, casually stepped in front of an errand pass and took it 50 yards to pay dirt.  Coach Greg told me to watch the waggle pass out the back field AJ stated afterwards.

Bottom line, we scouted them Coach Keith said.  We knew they were a single wing team and we prepared for that all week.  We had a pretty good idea of what they like to do.  And when they attempted to pass, we felt like they were out of there comfort zone.  But this is one game Coach Keith said.  It feels good right now, but we have our business to attend too.

The Monarchs 105's have a bye this week and but they will hit the road next Saturday against the Blackhawks.  Game time and location TBA.

Monarchs Run All Over North Philly

After a scoreless first quarter, a Monarchs trick play ended all hope for the North Philly Hurricanes.  Wide out A. Simons took a reverse from halfback A. Gleplay and sprinted 45 yards to the end zone and the rout was on.  The Monarchs put up 21 unanswered points and dominated the Hurricanes 21-0 to post there first win of the season.  Even with the decisive victory, the Monarchs coaches emphasized being "Better" after the game.  We want to play better no matter who we're playing coach Greg said.  We got to play better coach Tone barked. We turned the ball over twice and we gave up a huge pass play late in the second quarter.  We almost awoke a sleeping giant.

To be fair, the Monarchs offense looked pretty clean except for the two miscues and the defensive turned in a stalwart performance.  They were outstanding and discipline one referee commented after the contest.

On the other side, North Philly has nothing to be ashamed of.  Truth be told, they slowed up a budding juggernaut up until the fourth quarter.  "We need to show a little more pride" one Hurricane player said after the game.  We need to show that even though we're down, we're going to keep our heads up.

The Monarchs 105's will be on the road Sunday morning to face the North Philly Aztec at the brand new Team Vick Field located on 9th and Hunting Park.

Monarchs Take Down West Philly

I. Mills stood in the Delco Monarchs vaunted Power I formation and behind center for the first time this season.  Barely visible but definitely audible Mills calmly barked the cadence to get the offensive going.  What happened next was the Monarchs proceeded to rout the West Philly Panthers 36-6 in this non league scrimmage.

Mills debut created the perfect storm of anticipation as the 4 foot 5 quarterback made is first start after E. Musue abruptly moved to Texas last week. I was shocked when Musue's mother told me that they had to move because of a family emergency coach Greg said.  The kids were kinda shocked too.  But the show doesn't stop and football games still have to played coach Tone said.

Aside from a fumble and few errand passes, it was a smooth debut for I. Mills.  Offensively, the Monarchs all everything tailback T. Harmon lead the way with five touchdowns.  He caught one pass and had four on the ground and caused the panthers fits all day.  Truth be told, he just received some good block by his teammates and especially down field Coach Tone said.  It was just that simple.  We also took advantage of the defensive scheme the Panthers were trying to employ.  Its pitch and catch when you have that many people in the box.

The regular season starts next week as the Monarchs will travel to play against the Black Hawks division two team.

Monarchs Teach Drexel Hill a Harsh Lesson

They called the football scrimmage played yesterday at Penn Wood Middle School in Darby a clash for the ages, epic, monumental & maybe even historic.  Why??  Because the Bert Bell Memorial Football Conference routinely ducks or avoids Delaware Valley Pop Warner.  Finally, yes finally, the Drexel Hill Raiders bucked the trend and for the first time ever challenged the rugged Delco Monarchs.  I texted there head coach last week Coach Greg said and to my surprise he responded and they showed up on time.

As far as the contest, the Monarchs got the ball first and drove right down the field, unimpeded, as if they were out for an afternoon stroll.  It was all down hill from there, for Drexel Hill and the 100 plus fans who braved the heat interested in this over hyped scrimmage because the Monarchs would go on to blanked the  Raiders 30 - 0.  We simply imposed our will tonight Coach Tone shouted from the sidelines.  We got them off balance and we kept them off balance.   They stacked the line of scrimmage, we hit them with the deep ball.  They backed up and played zone we ran the ball up the gut.  Its football 101, Monarchs skipper Greg James barked.

The Monarchs were lead on offense by quarterback TJ. Harmon ( 4-6, 120 yards 2 TD's 1 Int. ) and halfback A Gleplay ( 5 rushes 105 yards 2 TD's ).  The defense was led by A. Thollie, I. McKnight, G. Subah to name a few.  I was satisfied with our effort tonight Coach Greg said afterwards even though we left some points on the table.  I'm very very proud of my kids especially because this was there first contest and you never know what to expect.  They rose to the occasion and dismantled a sound football team.

The Monarchs will host a jamboree this Saturday with West Philly Panthers and 84th Street Wolves. The scrimmage will start a 10AM.  The 170's will be on the road in Delaware against the No Limit Hurricanes.  Game time is 6:30PM

Monarchs Run Past South Philly

Yesterday, the Delco Monarchs opened preseason play on the road with the always dangerous and always talented South Philly Hurricanes from Liberty Pop Warner.  The undersized but disciplined Monarchs quickly proved that size does not matter as they coasted past the 'Caines 30 - 0. I was genuinely concerned on the trip over there Coach Greg said afterwards because I knew we were young and I did not know what to expect from my team especially in a hostile environment with so many spectators.  If I had to guess, it was at least two hundred people out there yelling and screaming "Go Hurricanes" but it had no affect on the Monarchs as they scored early and often.

I knew we had them in warm ups one of the parents said.  We were loud and in sync and I noticed a lot of Hurricanes players looking over at us.  When told what this parent said, Coach Greg responded "Warm Ups" don't win games, players do!  You can yell and scream all you want, its not going to help you tackle or score points.  The bottom line is this, today we were just a little better than them.

The Monarchs were led on offense by quarterback E. Musue. He went 3 for 5 with 100 yard passing and two touchdowns.  Halfback, T. Harmon also chipped in with 4 carries and 70 yards and two touchdowns while rookie tight end E. Freeman tallied his first career touchdown.  The Monarchs defense stood tall and rose to the occasion as they held the 'Caines scoreless.  When asked about the defensive effort, Coach Tone shouted the Monarchs win games with "Character and Cruelty" and as for the "Caines, truth be told, its just another game on the schedule.  Now, its time to pack the kids up and get them back to Darby before there parents start calling and asking where there children are at.   After that, the coaches will watch film and see what we did wrong.

Next week, the Monarchs will host the Drexel Hill Raiders (Bert Bell) and the West Philly Panthers (Liberty).  Both games are scheduled to be played at the Moose.

No Promises from the Top Coach

Well folk's, its that time of year to talk football, Delco Monarchs Football to be exact.  so we stopped by Monarchs Mini Camps to talk to the Monarchs skipper to get his prospective on the 2013 football season.  Well as always, its a struggle coach Greg said, it a struggle to get kids out here especially when you are surrounded by other organizations with more history but not necessary greatness.  They do a lot of trashing talking in "Dodge City" aka Darby Boro but we know the real deal Coach Tone the newly appointed lieutenant said.  Quiet as kept, we roughed up quiet a few Delco teams last year and the so called beef with the team on the other side of Main Street is not a beef because we never played and we never will.  We are not interested playing kids from the same town and in the same school district.  If we were smart, we would combine and bring Darby back to what it use to be in football  which was a powerhouse.  And those who know there history, the team was know as the Darby-Colwyn Rams.

Now with that being said, let get into this season.  The Monarchs are loaded at the skill positions and have a number of kids returning on each weight class.  The 105's are led by E. Gleplay, C. Soe, top new comer AJ Madden Jr.  Meanwhile, the 120's are led by E.Musue, T. Harmon, N. Brooker , G. Flahn.  The 145's are led by M. Saccoh, M. Starchia Jr., N. Butts, and top new comer A. Wood.  Lastly, the 170's are lea by TJ Harmon, A. Gleplay, A Wagay, and Z. Sheriff to name a few. In my opinion, we are loaded with talent but we may lack the discipline needed to be champs of our league.  I could be wrong.  Matter, I hope I'm wrong but we will be tested soon enough as the rugged West Philly Panthers and South Philly Hurricanes (Liberty Pop Warner) are scheduled to pay the Monarchs a visit this year.  Also, the Drexel Hill Raiders (Bert Bell ) supposedly inquired about some work.

Lastly, there are some new faces roaming the monarchs bench this year.  Gone is Coach Gene, who moved on to the Keystone Stone Oilers.  Added is Coach Ron and Coach Tim.  Coach Ron use to coach semi-pro and he brings mental toughness and work ethic to the fold. Coach Tim, played college ball a Wesley College and he will be in charge of getting the monarchs linemen in shape and ready to work.

Let See What Happens!!!!!!
