Panthers Prove Monarchs are Human...

After dismantling the Red Raiders of Coatesville last Saturday, it had become a little diffcult to image the Monarchs actually losing a game this season. Plain & simple the Monarchs looked virtually invincible against Coatesville. But football always humbles those teams who appear temporarily above failure. And last night, it was the Monarchs turn to look human. Quarterback Shaquilla "Shaq" Singletary was intercepted three times and two of his miscues resulted in Panther touchdowns. Add in two more fumbles / mistakes by newcomer George Korti and it turned into a long night for the entire Monarchs coaching staff.

"Sooner or later your going to have a tough game" said Monarchs Head Coach Greg James. That's football.... And that's exactly why I scheduled the West Philly Panthers. I knew they were big, physical and aggressive. And I wanted to see how my kids would react under pressure. Needless to say, I was a little disappointed with all the mistakes on offense but we held our own defensively. The Monarchs traditional stingy defense appeared to be in mid season form and caused the Panthers to turned the ball over on three separate occasions. Except for a broken play that resulted in the third and final Panther touchdown, the Monarchs defense kept the Panthers power I offense in check the entire night.

This was merely a speed bump Coach Greg said. Bottom line. We got some more work to do when we get back to Darby. The quarterback has to do a better job at recognizing what the defense is giving us. Then, we need to take advantage of the opportunities that are presented in order for us to win ballgames. It's just that simple. That's football 101.

The 160's will be off tomorrow, while the 135's will travel to the West Philly Panthers for the first and only scrimmage. Obviously, we want to do a little better than the 160's did Coach Mark said. Couple that with the fact that Liberty Pop Warner teams don't respect Delaware Valley Pop Warner teams and you got the formula for another heated battle. Hopefully, the young Monarchs will be up for the test. Game time is set for 6:30pm. And the Panthers are located on 57th and Vine Street.

Come out and support Monarch Football!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Monarchs Dismantle Coatesville 30 - 12

On a day in which potential rain and thunderstorms was predicted, mother nature eased up just enough to allow the Coatesville Red Raiders and the Delco Monarchs begin there 2009 football season. Albeit just a scrimmage, it still was an opportunity to get some work in according to coach Greg. Really, we lucked into this contest. Coach Stacy from the Darby Township Eagles set up it for us. He made a couple of phone calls and it was a done deal.

The Monarchs quickly showed there superiority to the visiting red raiders from Bert Bell Memorial Football Conference. On the first play from scrimmage Alvis Strocen slipped a Coatesville defender for a forty yard pass from newcomer Shaquilla "Shaq" Singletary. Two plays later Shaq hit Alvis in the end zone for the first score of the day. One the Monarchs next possession, Shaq hit Jaleel McMillian on a 30 yard catch and run which resulted in the Monarchs second score of the day.

Coatesville got right back into the contest with a 40 yard sweep off tackle for a touchdown. They caught us blitzing, Coach Greg said. And they took advantage of the opportunity that present itself when committing so many people to the line of scrimmage. After that play, the Monarchs defense tightened up. Coatesville gained very little positive yardage on the ground. And when they went to the air, Jaleel picked off a pass over the middle and proceeded to take it to the house before the play was blown dead.

One the Monarchs next offensive series, fullback Joey "Big Joe" Zahnee was unleashed. Big Joe had three straight carries of which the last resulted in another Monarch touchdown. That kid is just a load Coach Greg said. I'd hate to have to tackle him myself. His second carrier was just unbelieveable. Joey ran over two would be Coatesville tacklers before finally getting tripped up at the 2 yard line. All in all, it was a good day. I like how we competed, but there is definitely some things we need to work on. I'll look at the tape tonight or tomorrow and will make the necessary adjustment.

The Monarchs 160's get a much need rest on Sunday. But this Monday, it gets a little more interesting as the West Philly Panthers from Liberty Pop Warner pay the Monarchs a visit. Game time is set for 6:30pm at the Moose.

Monarchs Scoring Summary
A. Strocen 5 yard pass from S. Singletary
J. McMillian 30 yard pass from S. Singletary
J. McMillian 60 yard interception return
J. Zahnee 2 yard run
J. McMillian 5 yard run

Battles 4 Postions are Brewing?

Its only the second day of practice in full equipment but some position battles have emerged in the Monarchs training camp. For example M. Steele vs J. Zahnee (160), A. Gleplay vs E. Sheppard III (105), E. Gleplay vs S Pratt (90) and M. Moody vs A. Strocen (160) just to name a few. Yes sir, it was some serious contact out there Assistant Coach Gene said.

In each case, the underdogs / new players are fighting for playing time while some veterans try to coast through training camp off of last year's performances. Well, its not going to happen Coach Greg said. And some players are going to be in for a rude awakening when they find themselves on the bench or only playing because of the mandatory play rule. Its just that simple. And to be perfectly honest, I'm a little disappointed when players miss practice for bogus reasons. If we (the coaching staff ) are out there in the rain or heat, than so should our players. How do you expect to play if you don't practice? The more repetitions in practice, the better the player will become. That's the bottom line.

Still, it's fair to say the Monarchs are a little ahead of schedule this year. Why? Because we gave out our equipment on August 1st and the turnout was very very positive Coach Greg said. Right now we have over forty kids in pads and we usually carry about seventy-five to eighty kids a year. Our numbers are slightly up but, if your still interested in playing this year there is still time to sign up. So come up and check us out.

Below are some of the players that are missing in action.

T. Bruce (135), K. Cryor (135), J. McMillian (160), D. May (105), A. Morris (105), D. Douglas (90), R. Coles (90), X. Stevenson (90), G. Artis (135), J. River (160) and N. Baker (135).

FYI, EVERYDAY YOU MISS IS A DAY YOU ARE BEHIND!!!!!!!!
