Monarchs Take Down Falcons

Yesterday, the Delco Monarchs hosted its 2nd Annual Football Jamboree. There opponents were the mitey Woodlawn Falcons from Baltimore Maryland. Also in attendance were Delaware Valley Pop Warner league newcomers the Upland Regulators, and league rivals the CATS & the McCreesh Saints. Its was a tremendous turn out in Darby Borough and traffic in and around Penn Wood Middle was grid lock. I know my neighbors were probably upset with parking situation Coach Greg said but the neighborhood needed this. Its was a good day in Darby and it was drama free with no police activity.

As far as the game / scrimmage, the Monarchs stumbled out of the gate. I think it was a combination of nervousness and the crowd of spectators Coach Alex said. It was at least 500 hundred people out there yelling and screaming man. Heck, I had a little butterflies myself too. The monarchs 90lbs team offensive looked a little shakey and the defensive yielded a touchdown in the first session. After brief intermission and a verbal lashing, the young Monarchs woke up and played the visitors from Baltimore, Maryland to a draw.

Up next came Coach Gene and the monarchs 120lb team. They appeared to be in mid season form. Led by veterans T. Harmon, A. Gleplay, and E. Sheppard, the Monarchs scored early and often while the defense kept the visitors in check allowing only one touchdown. When questioned after the scrimmage, Coach Gene said we just caught them not playing fundamental football bottom line. They kept shooting the A & B gaps so we went to the toss sweep game.

The afternoon session featured the 160lb game. The Monarchs dominated the contest from start to finish but you could not tell by the look on Coach Greg's face. As usual he was barking out instructions even though the Monarchs defensive did not give up a single point. Meanwhile the offense was lead by S. Korti, G. Korti, and R. Johnson with each scoring touchdowns respectively. When questioned after the game, Coach Greg offered the following insight: The offensive play was spotty & inconsistent and the defense was not making the proper reads nor adjustments. I'll check the game tape and hopefully make the necessary corrections in preparation for Oak Lane next week.
